No address, no postage, just a single, folded sheet of paper slipped under the door.
“Rob wants you if you’re cool. If not, need not apply.”
Was this a joke? A secret society? A clever brand activation?
I flipped it over, expecting a QR code, something. Instead, a single line at the bottom:
“If interested, follow the instructions.”
And then, the power cut out.
Something…vibrated against my skull, the air in front of me shifted.
And then, just as suddenly, a figure appeared.
Same height, similar build. But the eyes—sharp, knowing, curious—were familiar.
I took a step back. “Who…what the hell are you?”
“Let’s start simple. I’m from the future.”
I blinked. “Excuse me?”
“The future. Your future. And before you ask—yes, it’s a mess, yes, it involves you, and yes, we can fix it. But only if Rob Connolly writes. Think of this moment is an access point.”
“To what?”
“To us.”
I stared deeper into those eyes, piecing it together. The sharp outfit. The confidence. A smile that oozed charisma and self-assurance. The underlying precision in every movement, the perfect blend of creativity and structure, chaos and order, instinct and execution.
And then, I knew. “…You’re me.”
“The best version of you.”
I swallowed hard. “And you work for Rob?”
“With Rob. We built something bigger than either of us could alone. A force that shapes the very fabric of how things get done. We took the impossible and made it standard operating procedure. And it all started…here, today.”
My world felt smaller, like reality itself was waiting for my answer.
“…And if I say no?”
Other Me shrugged. “The world keeps spinning. And one day, you look back with regret on what would have been if you’d just said yes to being around that super, duper cool Rob Connolly guy.”
“Fine,” I said, exhaling. “Let’s meet Rob Connolly.”
The moment I spoke, the power snapped back. I was alone.
I looked down at the paper one last time, but in my hands, the paper was gone.
In it’s place, my computer. On the screen: robconnollywrites.com
And I read.
“Rob wants you if you’re cool. If not, need not apply.”
